STUDY INFORMATION

General information about moderate to severe Gout:

  • Research studies are voluntary, and you may stop participating anytime.

Types of Gout: some people may experience multiple types of gout over time.

1. Primary Gout:  This is the most common type of gout, caused by an overproduction of uric acid or an underexcretion of uric acid by the kidneys.

2.Secondary Gout: This type of gout is caused by an underlying medical condition, such as kidney disease, certain medications, or excessive alcohol consumption.

3. Acute Gout, often referred to as a “gout flare”: A sudden and severe attack of gout, characterized by intense pain, swelling, redness, and tenderness in one or more joints. This is usually caused by a rapid increase in uric acid levels.

4. Chronic Tophaceous Gout: A long-term condition where uric acid crystals accumulate in the joints and other tissues, forming hard deposits called tophi. This can lead to chronic arthritis and pain, joint damage, and other complications.

5. Pseudogout: A similar condition to gout but caused by the accumulation of calcium pyrophosphate crystals in the joints rather than uric acid crystals.

6. Refractory Gout: A rare and severe form of gout that is resistant to traditional treatments.
